STRIKE IN ’’MAGNOHROM’’

The agony of over 2200 employees in ’’Magnohrom’’ Kraljevo continues, although employees have been trying for more than 70 days to protect their rights by organizing a strike, under the Law and Purchase & Sales Contract. Almost 10 months have passed since ’’Global Steel’’ became a 100% owner of ’’Magnohrom’’ at tender. Instead of fulfilling the contractual obligations, this company obstructs the obligations and violates Serbian laws.

The young people in Serbia, compared to persons of the same age from most of the European countries, are in a more unenviable situation. Among other things, this is reflected in the fact that a majority of us have never travelled beyond Serbian borders, and especially not to the EU countries. Taking advantage of chairing a meeting by Germany in the EU in the first half of 2007, the Embassy of the FR of Germany in Belgrade has, in cooperation with the European movement in Serbia, five German Foundations, German Organization for Technical Cooperation and Students’ Network AEGEE, organized a project titled ’’Welcome to Germany’’, which was realized during April and May. Within this project, Germany was visited by approx. 200 secondary-school students and university students from Serbia.

A majority of economic entities with greater portion of public capital commenced preparations for privatization in compliance with the Privatization Law, burdened with earlier debts to banks, state, commercial creditors, employees, low capacity utilization level and a very large number of employees relative to optimum required, insufficient receipts and lack of working capital. Many actions were taken for preparing the economic entities, i.e., companies, for a successful privatization, which is the priority in the process of carrying out reforms. The actions especially refer to abatement of obligations undertaken by capital buyer.

The interceding of MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ to conduct a social dialogue with employers was confirmed by the visit of the IMF to Kikinda Foundry. Colleague Anne Marie Mureau encouraged the partners, namely, the Management of Kikinda Foundry and MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ that they should develop the culture of dialogue and arguments and in the interest of a more stable economic situation of the Foundry, as well as better working conditions and higher employee earnings.
