SEMINAR IN ZAGREB
UNION ORGANIZING IN SOUTH-EAST EUROPE
Zagreb, January 16 2008
The Seminar on the subject of ’’Union organizing in South-East Europe’’ and ’’Elaboration of the Project for improving working conditions and standard in 2008’’, held in Zagreb from December 16 – 18, 2007, gathered representatives of textile, leather and footwear industry union from Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia and Serbia. Serbia was represented by Ljubina Banovic and Bosko Karalic of ’’Nezavisnost’’ BU of TLF. After debates and discussions on the subject of employee status in the textile industry of South-East Europe, it was concluded that working conditions were difficult, standards low, and that a majority of workers lost their jobs just in this part of Europe in the last few years.

AGRI INVESTMENTS, Consortium NEVERFIELD LIMITED and POL-MOT WARFAMA S.A. and Consortium HASS-SIP submitted tenders to the Tender Commission, formed for the sale of ’’IMT’’ Novi Beograd. The prices offered for the company itself, as well as the amounts of the investments differ, but only the amount of compensation for employees, based on the Social Program, is identical, and it is minimal, namely, 100 Euro per year of service.

The end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008 were characterized by meetings of MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ and Job Safety Administration with the view to continue and upgrade the cooperation and education that have existed so far between the MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ and Job Safety Administration. The director of this Administration, Mrs. Vera Bozic-Trefald, stressed the readiness and openness for cooperation with our Union, and the participation of MWBU in the Job Safety Fair was agreed, which would take place from May 27 – 30, 2008.

’’SINVOZ’’ AD, ZRENJANIN
FORMER WORKERS AND SMALL SHAREHOLDERS OF ’’SINVOZ’’ ENTERED THE FACTORY

An Extraordinary Meeting of Small Shareholders of ’’Sinoz’’ AD was held in the premises of ’’Sinvoz’’ AD, Zrenjanin, on December 28 2007, at which the status of former workers and small shareholders of ’’Sinvoz’’ was discussed. A notification of December 17 2007 was received from the Privatization Agency, in which it was stated that an additional 15-day term should be set for Nebojsa Ivkovic in order that he fulfilled the agreed obligations, concerning the investments, and produced proof of their fulfillment, because on the contrary, it would annul the Purchase and Sales Contract. The boxes containing welding apparatus arrived in the Rolling Stock Factory on the next day, but without the Tribunal’s order. The Regional Trustee Office of MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ proposed immediately, through Small Shareholders Association, that an Extraordinary Meeting should be held, at which it would be proposed to shareholders not to leave the Factory until the Purchase and Sales Contract was terminated and bankruptcy proceedings annulled. Small shareholders supported this idea immediately and informed the Trustee in bankruptcy, Nebojsa Bajic, about this. Since then, a majority of fired workers have been on tour of duty day and night, they changed shifts and guarded the Factory.

A decisiveness to fight for their company was shown best by employees of ‘’Minel Elvo’’ which expected 2008 within the company area, namely, on the barricades. The President of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’, Dragan Matic, was the first to visit the Factory on January 1, 2008 who wished a happy and successful New Year to employees of this company and said, on this occasion, that the situation in which employees of ‘’Minel Elvo’’ found themselves in 2007, when their company was plundered, would never happen again.

Besides all warnings and actions that the area of job safety and industrial hygiene in ‘’CIMOS’’ Foundry in Kikinda should be regulated in compliance with the Law, which the ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Union has supported for more than two years, another tragic accident happened, in which Ramakov Pavle, who worked as a crane operator, lost his life on December 28, 2007.
