TALKS BETWEEN MWBU ’’NEZAVISNOST’’ AND JOB SAFETY ADMINISTRATION TERMINATED

COOPERATION WITH TRADE UNIONS IS A BASE FOR JOB SAFETY AND INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE

Belgrade, January 15, 2008
The end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008 were characterized by meetings of MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ and Job Safety Administration with the view to continue and upgrade the cooperation and education that have existed so far between the MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ and Job Safety Administration. The director of this Administration, Mrs. Vera Bozic-Trefald, stressed the readiness and openness for cooperation with our Union, and the participation of MWBU in the Job Safety Fair was agreed, which would take place from May 27 – 30, 2008.

The MWBU Action called ’’Safe Job, Good Job’’ shall be supported by the Job Safety Administration through training of the Job Safety Commission’s members, as well as those of MWBU Presidency. Trainees would be awarded the Certificate of Job Safety Awareness if they completed the training successfully.

Another possibility for cooperation was ascertained on the issue of work in the Foundries of gray pig-iron castings and non-ferrous castings, which should result in the publication of a joint booklet entitled ’’Safety in Foundries.’’ The stated booklet should appear at the Fair. The financing of booklet publishing should be secured through the Safety Agency, where Mrs. Trefald will be a mediator.

The data on the number of court trial cases and the number and degree of injuries at work have been requested from the director of the mentioned Administration. There is no information at this time of the amount of fines to be paid by irresponsible employers on the basis of labor inspectors reports, and the Administration itself is not competent for such kind of monitoring and record keeping. It is possible that such data exist in the Ministry of Justice and Labor Inspection, which can be obtained on the basis of a request in writing to be forwarded to mentioned institutions by MWBU.

The answers we got in the Job Safety Administration tell us about some aspects of further activities, and those are insisting on the data on accidents and their causes at work, as well as filing an appeal to the inspection and judicial authorities and using this information with the view of decreasing possible injuries and accidents at work in the future.

The talks were conducted by the President of MWBU Job Safety Commission, Branimir Tomasevic, Vice-President of MWBU, and member of the Commission, A. Todic, MWBU Secretary.
