A LETTER SENT BY DRAGAN MATIC, PRESIDENT OF MWBU “NEZAVISNOST”, TO ALL MEMBERS OF “NEZAVISNOST” UNION AND WORKERS OF “LJUBISA MIODRAGOVIC” FROM PRIJEPOLJE

“INSANE” EMPLOYER

Belgrade, November 27 2007
The people’s saying: “Distrust those that are marked by the Creator” becomes serious especially when a person having bad luck, by concurrence of circumstances, controls other people, their lives and their families lives in a certain way. Such “insane” people appear often in a group of employers, company owners, to which the rights of people, workers, trade union representatives and trade unions is an unknown category. Serbian legislation regulated this area more or less successfully, which the workers, trade unions and employers have to apply and observe.

Unfortunately, this phenomenon that one does not obey laws and that workers are menaced and mistreated is becoming more frequent in many companies. Instead of providing regular and good pays for workers, warm machine shops, secure working environment, many employers behave in an arrogant and primitive manner toward employees and they are especially arrogant toward workers representatives – unionists, who indicate the irregularities to employers. Such employers resort to “performances” in which they try to demonstrate force and power, but in fact, they sink more deeply in primitivism and arrogance. Educated and enlightened union representatives are trying to initiate social dialogue, they refer to laws, corporate culture, International Conventions on the protection of workers and their rights, but in vane.

In such cases, the “Nezavisnost” Union resorts to reporting all irregularities to Labor Inspection that is competent for establishing the facts and sanctioning an employer. We often have to sue “insane” employers and protect members of our Union, as well as other workers in this way. Some employers claim they have support from certain important people from Belgrade, mainly politicians or people employed in various Government Departments and government agencies, which is often a lie. What should employees do when they have an “insane” employer? It is best that they report everything to their “important” people from trade union and not expose themselves to this employer. Such an employer only waits for someone to do something wrong, and then they start giving notices of dismissal, initiate disciplinary procedures, etc.

The “Nezavisnost” Union advises all its members wherever they are, in Prijepolje, Belgrade, Leskovac, Subotica, throughout Serbia – “We will not desert our men and women colleagues, because they have no one else to protect them, but us.”
