“ZASTAVA” CARS HAVE THE POTENTIAL
Kragujevac, May 7, 2007.Coming of the president of MWBU “Nezavisnost” to the meeting of the Coordinating Committee of MWBU “Nezavisnost” of Sumadija-Pomoravlje region was also intended for meeting with the management of “Zastava Automobili”. Dragan Srejovic, president of the Board of Directors of “Zastava Automobili” received Dragan Matic, president of MWBU “Nezavisnost”, and Mileta Gujanicic, Vice-President. Slobodan Vasic, regional trustee of MWBU “Nezavisnost” for Sumadija-Pomoravlje region was also present at the meeting. Introducing the guests, the host of this meeting, Nenad Matic, president of “Nezavisnost” Union of “Zastava Automobili” stressed the previous good cooperation of “Nezavisnost” Union and the management of “Zastava Automobili”.
The president of the Board of Directors of “Zastava Automobili” presented to all those present a survey of the activities of “Zastava” in the last few years.
-“The restructuring period of “Zastava” was neither terminated nor the sale of the largest part of the Company which were or are still a part of “Zastava” Group. Considering the situation in automotive industry on the whole, it isn’t so good, and “Zastava Automobili” felt this in the most difficult way. The sanctions, bombing and destroying “Zastava” left a deep trace, but the production of “Fiat 10” is especially encouraging, as well as the announcement of the signed agreement with “Opel” on the production of “Astra Classic”. This production should start next year. The sum of 11,5 million Euro, that was paid back to “Fiat” from own funds, is a good indicator that “Zastava” is not ruined and that it has the potential. One half of the moneys was paid out for the “Fiat’s” license for the production of “Zastava Punto” and “Zastava 10”, and over 80% of the equipment has been installed at this time. Approximately 400 workers have been directly engaged in the production of “Zastava 10” and their employment is encouraging for everyone in “Zastava” and Kragujevac. The import of 5000 “Astra Classic” cars is expected too. We expect from the Government to regulate duty-free imports by a decree and in this way enable further financing of “Opel” program, stressed Dragan Srejovic in his speech.
The meeting was also attended by representatives of other trade unions of “Zastava Automobili”: president of the Autonomous Trade Union, Zoran Mihajlovic, president of Serbian Automotive Industry’s Trade Union, Dragan Ostojic, president of “ASNS”, Srdjan Marinkovic, and president of “Solidarnost” Trade Union, Milisav Antonijevic. Views have been coordinated that trade unions have to act in unison with arguments and facts confirming that automotive industry has an economic opportunity.
The MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ presented its idea and the one of ‘’Friedrich Ebert’’ Foundation to those present, concerning the holding of international Conference, the working title of which is ‘’Situation and prospects of automotive industry in Serbia and South-East Europe’’. This idea was supported by ‘’Zastava Automobili’’ and it has been promised that the Chamber of Commerce of Kragujevac and Veroljub Stevanovic, mayor of Kragujevac would be included in the project. Trade union representatives, which were present, agreed on the necessity of joint appearance in order to maintain and improve the status of ‘’Zastava Automobili’’ until the privatization.
