ACTION “FOR SAFE WORK AND BETTER LIFE IN THE FACTORY” TAKEN BY “NEZAVISNOST” UNION OF ‘’CIMOS’’ KIKINDA FOUNDRY
A SUCCESSFUL END
Kikinda, February 20, 2007
The end of the action “For safe work and better life in the factory” taken by “Nezavisnost” Union of “CIMOS” Kikinda Foundry was crowned by presentation of the results. One thousand and eight hundred questionnaires were distributed to workers of the Foundry in all three shifts and 1092 questionnaires were filled out and returned to “Nezavisnost” Union. Ten demands sent to the Management of “CIMOS” Kikinda Foundry were supported by 1088 workers, and in the case of going on strike, 1056 Foundry workers came out for the strike, representing approximately 60% of distributed questionnaires.
Such results encourage the organizers of the action “For safe work and better life in the factory”, with the fact that director Latinovic tried to prohibit this action. It was noticed that active members of the Autonomous Trade Union placed the questionnaire distribution under “surveillance” and they invited employees to “informative talks”. The employees said they feared that someone would see them with the questionnaires, because of “surveillance” carried out by the Autonomous Trade Union and some plant managers. The intention of “Nezavisnost” Union to inform director Latinovic personally of the poll results failed due to his “busyness”.
The presentation of the results was a moment that “Nezavisnost” Union of
“CIMOS” Kikinda Foundry announced the initiative for making a Collective
Agreement on Safety and Industrial Hygiene and forming a Job Safety
Commission. The employees of “CIMOS” Foundry will also get the brochure titled “Safety and Industrial Hygiene”, published by the MWBU “Nezavisnost” with the support of “Friedrich Ebert” Foundation. The brochure itself is a practical guide through the Law and safety and industrial hygiene area, and it comprises several key chapters: trade union’s role, employees’ role, relation between an employer and employee, as well as how one should respond to the requirements of the Law?
An integral part of the initiative and action is a Draft of the Collective Agreement on Safety and Industrial Hygiene, as well as a proposal of the MWBU “Nezavisnost” for the Management of “CIMOS” Kikinda Foundry. We expect that the representatives of the Autonomous Trade Union will take part in this action and thereby confirm their actual interest in the projects aiming at improvement of safety and sanitary conditions in the Foundry.
A presentation of the “Safety and IH Form” was also interesting, and it should be used for keeping records of injuries, as well as for preventive use in the sense of reporting potentially hazardous jobs and workplaces in the opinion of workers themselves. This Form has been made according to the model of American practice and it is used in USS Company’s plants worldwide.
Hoping that interceding of “Nezavisnost” Union of “CIMOS” Kikinda Foundry will be supported by the Management and the Autonomous Trade Union, we expect some concrete actions and results.
