‘’CIMOS’’ KIKINDA FOUNDRY

ACTION FOR SAFE WORK AND BETTER LIFE IN THE FACTORY

Kikinda, February 8, 2007
The ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Metal Workers’ Branch Union and ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Union of AD Livnica ‘’CIMOS’’ Kikinda presented their peaceful and democratic action for ‘’Safe work and better life in the factory’’ to journalists and the media in Kikinda. The public had the opportunity to be informed about 10 demands of ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Union sent to the executive management of ‘’CIMOS’’ Kikinda, after frequent and serious employee injuries in the Foundry.

The ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Union of AD Livnica ‘’CIMOS’’ Kikinda launched an action for ‘’Safe work and better life in the factory’’, with the intention of indicating the opinion of workers of ‘’CIMOS’’ Kikinda Foundry, regarding safety and industrial hygiene, to the executive management. A worker’s death and other workers’ injuries in ‘’CIMOS’’ Foundry wasn’t a sufficient warning to the management of the Foundry and leadership of the Autonomous Trade Union to support the actions of ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Union, in order that workers stay and work safely in this factory. This peaceful and democratic union action is an expression of disapproval and non-acceptance of ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Union of ‘’CIMOS’’ Foundry of the current situation, with many threats, underestimating, non-observance of the law, pressures, loss of lives and injuries …

The ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Metal Workers’ Branch Union and ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Union of AD Livnica ‘’CIMOS’’ Kikinda have taken actions for several months, aimed at improving the working, living and safety conditions in ‘’CIMOS’’ Foundry and that the company Management and Autonomous Trade Union of ‘’CIMOS’’ Foundry haven’t taken any specific action in order to prevent crippling and death of employees in ‘’CIMOS’’ Foundry Kikinda.

The ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Metal Workers’ Branch Union and ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Union of AD Livnica ‘’CIMOS’’ Kikinda request employees support for ten demands sent to the management of AD Livnica ‘’CIMOS’’ Kikinda, as well as a support for the strike, if the need arises.

D E M A N D S

1.Worker’s safety and health may not be jeopardized! Everybody has the right to come back home safe and sound!

2.No one can get notice of dismissal until his guilt is proved! A worker cannot be dismissed from the factory and thrown out as a common ‘’criminal’’ without sufficient evidence!

3.No one can be assigned a job requiring lower qualifications without obtaining Union’s opinion, although this isn’t in conformity with the law!

4.No one can be forced to work on defective machines and equipment and in unsafe conditions! Refusal to perform a job in such situations does not represent a violation of discipline!

5.The Employer is obligated, under threat of dismissal, that his management will have to respect workers’ and human rights and freedom of union organizing, personality and dignity of employees!

6.No one can be forced to work overtime without his consent and contrary to statutory provisions, except in the case of ‘’force majeure’’ (average, damage, natural disaster and working hours provided for by the law).

7.In case of injuries, big damages, poor production results, one has to investigate manager’s responsibility, and if a manager is within a higher level of management, the investigation should be extensive and detailed and responsibility appropriate!

8.Independent public institutions have to examine and monitor the quality of air, water and land within the company area and in the surroundings!

9.That detectors and monitors for harmful substances have to be placed at the company’s gates, the so-called “Ecological traffic lights”, as well as filters for harmful substance elimination.

10.That a just compensation is to be paid out to all workers injured at work in the company and families of the deceased workers have to be indemnified in compliance with the law. “CIMOS” Foundry Kikinda must take care of the deceased workers’ children and their education.

The action for “Safe work and better life in the factory” will last 2 days, and after collecting the questionnaires and their processing, the workers, executive management and the public will be informed of the results. Addressing the Foundry’s workers by means of a leaflet, the MWBU “Nezavisnost” and “Nezavisnost” Union of AD Livnica “CIMOS” Kikinda cited a part of a song dedicated to safety, whose author is American worker Jerry Stemper:

SONG: WE COME TO WORK ONLY TO WORK – NOT TO DIE

I would like to have all fingers on my hands when I retire. I don’t want to become dull and that my feelings are flagged. I would like to have ears before I retire. I would like to hear an applause. I would like to see my grandsons and be able to hold them in my arms when they begin to cry. We come here only to work, not to die!

You and me know that things not being by the rule can be rectified in a relatively easy way, but we have never achieved anything by kneeling and begging!

For this reason, we now look right into the eyes, shoulder by shoulder, we stand beside you and say: We come here only to work, not to die!
