THE STRIKE ENDED




Kraljevo, February 6, 2007.
After nine days of strike and nineteen days since the strike announcement, the strike ended in the Railroad Car Factory Kraljevo by signing the Agreement on meeting the strikers’ demands.

Although the Strikers’ Committee, formed of two representative Trade Unions, ’’Nezavisnost’’ and Autonomous Union, demanded the fulfillment of social requirements, namely, payment of outstanding earnings, the strike was not only directed at the employer, Ukrainian company ISD ’’Dombas’’, but also at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Privatization Agency and local government, which haven’t fulfilled their accepted obligations even after six months, i.e. paid the debt to the Railroad Car Factory Kraljevo and thereby enabled deblocking of the Factory’s account and undisturbed operations.

The strike and negotiations were conducted in a rather unpleasant atmosphere because of Rodoljub Maricic’s resignation from the post of director and suspension of the complete Strikers’ Committee by the new acting director Bosko Slavkovic. The passions curbed only after revocation of the suspensions and involvement of Union’s top leadership in the negotiating process, which finally resulted in signing the Agreement. It should be mentioned that, besides the strikers and their leadership, the media played an important role in stopping the strike, especially the local media, informing objectively and daily of the strike and negotiations progressing.

Viewed on the whole, the MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ can be satisfied with the results it has achieved in stopping the strike successfully, but cannot be contented with treating the problem that arose by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the local government, which still think that someone else should solve the problems they are responsible for. If they do not finish their part of the job, there won’t be any results concerning the agreement that has been signed and the entire process will start again from the beginning.
