VOTERS – ELECTORS: LOOKING FORWARD TO JANUARY 21

REPEATING PROMISES AS A POLITICAL RITUAL

Belgrade, January 22, 2007
I have been writing down intensively the statements of political leaders for several weeks already, which ''begin to fly'' in the pre-election campaign. The promises made by political leaders, compared to those from the previous pre-election campaigns, are very similar, and this is encouraging. All politicians speak constantly about the workers, retired persons, standards, European Union, fight against crime and corruption. It is interesting that when some political leaders say this, the slogans said in the same way – sound different.

How can we understand and believe the parties, which went to war with the whole world, when they speak about integrations, cooperation, economic prosperity and social welfare?!

It is really unbelievable that I've found out not until now that I have lived in a leftist environment. The politicians speak all the time about the workers, development on an equal footing, employment, social justice. When they have become such as they are, I really don't know, but someone has ruined our Serbia. First they destroy and then they build! Support is required from the workers, unemployed, unions, minority groups and associations. Serbia in Europe, rich Serbia, proud Serbia, strong Serbia, Serbia in us and we in it, are only some of the slogans ''showering'' citizens from all sides. Each party says: ''We are the solution, future, we will find jobs for unemployed, we will build, we will fight ...''.

What should a common man do, whom to believe and vote for? It will be really difficult. One thing is certain. Having experienced earlier pre-election promises and their poor keeping, as well as the fact that a significant number of Serbian citizens has ''bad memory'', and they watch TV a lot, it will turn out that one should choose ''less evil''.

These elections will not have ''satisfied individuals'' in the proper sense of the word, but deceived voters, who will complain about having made a bad choice, on January 22, and that they will never vote for those from yesterday. And those from yesterday will be on power. They will forget the promises and form unprincipled and unexpected coalitions.

The voters will wait for the next chance again and naturally, new elections too.
