THE “NEZAVISNOST” BRANCH UNION OF TEXTILES, LEATHER AND FOOTWEAR INDUSTRY LAUNCHED A CAMPAIGN FOR IMPROVING THE WORKING CONDITIONS IN THIS INDUSTRY
A DRESS SEWN OUT OF DESPAIR
Belgrade, December 29, 2006
The “Nezavisnost” Branch Union of Textiles, Leather and Footwear Industry launched a campaign for improving the working conditions in the industrial branches it covers. The campaign is going to last during the whole next year, and the public will be informed of the details subsequently. We start the campaign by a letter of unknown lady …
The letter reads as follows:
-“Important ..important …important. The New Year is approaching. I bought a fantastic dress – “the dream of dreams” at this time last year. I was looking forward to the New Year’s Eve party to fascinate all the present with my appearance. However, the party was a real fiasco, because I felt terrible. I felt stinging and pricking inside my “fantastic dress” and felt uncomfortable in every way, so that I couldn’t wait any longer and wanted to take it off. My husband told me that this couldn’t be because of the dress but that I was nervous and that I always found fault with everything. This was really a fiasco.
There were several occasions during the year in which I put on my “fantastic dress” and the same thing happened again: stinging, pricking, certain unrest and anxiety that I felt while I was wearing it and even after wearing it. If my financial standing was better I would have certainly thrown it away. I went to the doctors in order to establish whether I was allergic to something. They advised me to examine better the types of materials from which my dress was made and monitor the kinds of clothes causing similar sensations. The doctors haven’t found anything but they advised me to surround myself with positive energy.
Then I had got it! It became clear to me. I remembered a TV program in which there was word about bad working conditions in the textile industry, noise and overtime hours that women spent working on sewing and other machines, about the pain they felt in their back and eyes, dust they inhale, their tears, sweat and suffering. I feel that even my “fantastic dress” was sewn in such conditions, without good ventilation and with flickering lights, with the hands of a woman worker who was informed in that instant that she had to stay overtime until a product series was finished. And she was worried, because she left a little child in a private apartment, supervised periodically by a neighbor, until her husband came back from his work at a building site. My “fantastic dress” is full of negative energy, concern, suffering, discontent with poor earnings, frustration, discrimination”, it is said at the end of this unknown lady’s letter.
In this way, the letter signed by N.N. served as a theme for this Union’s already planned campaign for improving the working conditions in the industries it covers and with which it is going to deal with during the next year. We already have the support for the campaign by the Citizens’ Association “Felicitas” with which we cooperate. Join us.
