IN MEMORIAM: ACADEMICIAN MIODRAG CEPERKOVIC, Dr

A MAN WHO BUILT AND DEVELOPED SERBIAN METAL INDUSTRY




Belgrade, December 9, 2006
The academician Miodrag Ceperkovic died in Belgrade on Wednesday, December 6, 2006, a man who was meritorious and responsible for the construction of a large part of the metal industry complex in Serbia, primarily for project engineering (designing), construction and start-up of the Plants within the Iron and Steel Works of Smederevo (presently U. S. Steel Serbia), Tin Plate Factory in Sabac, Galvanizing Mill in Vucitrn, Seamed Tubing Factory in Urosevac, Section and Pipe Factory in Aleksinac, “Jugometal Integrated Works”. Dr Ceperkovic was accused by the former authorities of being a “techno-manager” and he was relieved from all duties in 1974. The cremation of Miodrag Ceperkovic is today, December 9, 2006, on the New Cemetery in Belgrade.

The deceased Miodrag Ceperkovic, Ph. D., was born on November 23, 1927 in Rudjinci near Vrnjacka Banja. He was a Serb by nationality. He completed High School in Kraljevo, Vrnjacka Banja and Krusevac and Faculty of Engineering in Belgrade. He passed the Ph. D. final from technical sciences, i.e. from the occupational safety area in mining and metallurgy. He was the author of five books and of over 40 scholarly and expert works. He was a member of the Coal and Steel Committee of the UN for 16 years. Also, he was a member of New York Academy of Sciences (USA).

WORK IN MINING INDUSTRY:
As an engineer and then a director he achieved great success in the exploitation of lead-zinc ore and the reconstruction of mines “Stari Trg”, “Novo brdo”, “Kiznica” and “Suplja stijena”. He took part in research of iron ore, nickel and cobalt on the territory of Serbia.

WORK IN METALLURGY:
He was the General Director of the NEW IRON AND STEEL WORKS IN SMEDEREVO in the period from 1960 – 1974. He firstly reconstructed the old plants at the location of the so-called Old Steel Works, and then he committed himself to designing, managing comprehensive construction and he started up most of the basic production plants of the integral metallurgical complex for iron and steel production (Blast Furnace in 1971 and Converter Steel Shop in 1974), cold rolled strips (the Cold Rolling Mill started operation in 1974), Hot Strip Mill (he signed the Sales Contract with Thyssen for equipment purchase). By dr Ceperkovic’s interceding the New Iron & Steel Works in Smederevo was designed and built to produce 2 million tons of steel in spite of violent opposing by many political circles.

Dr Ceperkovic took part in designing and building of iron ore mines “Rudiste” and “Suva ruda”, he built the Seamed Tubing Factory in Urosevac, Galvanizing Mill in Vucitrn, Tin Plate Factory in Sabac, Sections and Shaped Tubes Factory in Aleksinac, he founded and managed the integrated company “JUGOMETAL KOMBINAT” Belgrade. Dr Ceperkovic was accused by the former authorities of being a “techno-manager” and was relieved from all duties in 1974.

After dismissal from all jobs and positions, dr Ceperkovic performed different jobs: he was a representative of Yugoslav Chamber of Commerce in Cairo, representative of “Metalservis”, and then of “Beogradska banka” in New York, he worked on strategic development of electric power industry and raw material base in Serbia in the project team of dr Avramovic, he was a consultant of “Meri Linc” bank of New York for investments in Serbia and Montenegro, he was an advisor for mining industry and metallurgical issues in “GOSA” and the President of Scientific Research Council of the Institute “Kirilo Savic” from Belgrade.

“The God himself sent the Americans to Smederevo. I was severely criticized in Serbia because of the Iron and Steel Works, so that I got sick of everything. I was really very happy when the Iron and Steel Works started operation with two Blast Furnaces, after so many years, and produced 2 million tons of steel. Now, I can die “as a man”, said Ceperkovic in his last public appearance.

The cremation of Miodrag Ceperkovic is today, on December 9, 2006, on the New Cemetery in Belgrade.
