SEMINAR: “CAMPAIGN WITH THE VIEW OF INCREASING THE NUMBER OF MEMBERS”
HOW TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF MEMBERS?

Belgrade, November 15, 2006
The Seminar on the subject “Campaign with the view of increasing the number of members”, organized by Friedrich Ebert Foundation and MWBU “Nezavisnost” for the members of the Metal Workers’ Branch Union “Nezavisnost”, Metal Workers’ Union of Croatia and Metal Workers’ Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina, took place in Belgrade on November 13 and 14, 2006. The speaker was colleague Krzystof Zgoda from the “Solidarnost” Union, Poland. The seminar was attended by the representatives of “Nezavisnost” Branch Union of Textile, Leather and Shoes Industry and “Nezavisnost” Branch Union of Traffic and Telecommunications.

The current situation concerning the membership in the metal industry sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia was presented to attendees at the beginning of the seminar, and after that colleague Krzystof Zgoda established some basic guidelines for pursuing the campaign with the view of increasing the number of members. The working parties dealt with the following questions, concerning each of the countries: What do we want to change by organizing workers? What is the necessary condition for this change? The work results and appraisals were presented to the participants.

After these presentations and discussion, colleague Krzystof Zgoda spoke about fundamental development of possible actions for the campaign, based on the results of working parties. He informed the attendees about the specific activities and steps that were being taken during the campaigns with concrete examples and experiences that “Solidarnost” Union had when organizing workers. An example of workers organizing in the Security has been stated.

On the second day of the Seminar, the attendees, assigned to working groups, worked out the organizational plan for pursuing the campaign. The following questions served as a basis for the plan work-out: What? Who? When? How?

The Seminar was evaluated by the attendees and lecturer as successful. The representatives of all three Unions have drawn a conclusion that the plans, worked out, should be carried out and that mutual cooperation was to be continued.

The Metal Workers’ Branch Union “Nezavisnost” is going to deal intensively with this subject in the following period, and it has been agreed that the members of the Youth Section of MWBU “Nezavisnost” should be in charge of these activities. Six representatives of the Youth Section of MWBU “Nezavisnost” attended this seminar in order to acquire the knowledge and skills required for performing these activities.
