AN OPEN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT OF SERBIAN EMPLOYERS’ UNION
A GLANCE THROUGH “DEVIL’S WELL”

-“My opinion of you, as a responsible and honest social partner worthy of respect, changed at the moment you gave a tactless and unfounded statement at the Session of the Socio-Economic Council of Serbia, after my statement and conclusion that Predrag Rankovic Peconi’s conduct in the companies he bought had elements of criminal and terrible conduct”, said Dragan Matic, President of MWBU “Nezavisnost”, in his letter.

On that occasion, I suggested that certain actions had to be taken against the employers who were the ones who "ruined the union, employees and economic systems which they privatized”, with the support of the Government, Minister with portfolio and Serbian Employers’ Union, and he mentioned Predrag Rankovic Peconi as an example. Mr. Peconi absolutely deserved this judgment, but the problem was that in the new (evolutionary phase) he ruined even the companies he bought, and the fact that Peconi stated he had the support of great political “players” such as DSS (Serbian Democratic Party) and Prime Minister Kostunica, was especially disturbing. The fact that neither Serbian Employers’ Union, whose member is Peconi, and you as the President, reacted to his conduct, and you felt you should follow my statement and state that MWBU “Nezavisnost”, by organizing a strike in “MBS” – “almost rushed”, as you said.

When you and me and this state know from which segment of society Predrag Rankovic Peconi comes from, maybe you are right, but this should be in no case considered that we were not right when we organized a strike in “MBS”, in compliance with the law. The best evidence of this are the Decisions issued by the Company Inspectorate of Smederevo.

An adequate response was received concerning such decision. Instead of carrying out the decision, Peconi has prohibited 300 workers to go on strike in the company in which they are employed by hiring a “private army” and using his dogs “Dobermans”.

Peconi gives notices of dismissal to strikers and thereby shows that he is “outside” the state, laws and standards. And you say that we rushed?! We remind you that you refused to take part in the open speech organized by the MWBU “Nezavisnost” in Smederevo titled “Case study in MBS”. The following organizations and institutions took part in the open speech: International Metal Workers’ Federation (IMF), Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Policy of the Republic of Serbia, Company Inspectorate of Smederevo, Republic Agency for peaceful settlement of disputes, National Employment Agency of Smederevo, UBU “Nezavisnost” and MWBU “Nezavisnost”.

“You, as the representative of Serbian Employers’ Union, and Mr. Peconi, did not appear. Why? Is it possible that by paying membership dues to the SEU and perhaps to some other organization, Predrag Rankovic Peconi gets protection and support for the things he does in “Albus”, “Vital”, “Rubin”, “MBS”. What is the cost of support for tolerating the violation of law, arrogant, indecent and uncivilized behavior?

For this reason, it would have been better that you were silent so that we only suspected this. It would have been better that, if you were not in some business deal with Peconi, you should review and respond to the documents that I would forward to you, associated with the strike in “MBS”. If you have a “deal”, and it is possible that everything is “business” for you and a chance to earn money, then throw this in the waste bin and try to forget your role, you possibly have in the case “MBS – PECONI – WORKERS’ STRIKE”. I remind you of people’s saying: “Whom you are friendly with, you behave the same way as your friend does”, as well as the fact that Predrag Rankovic Peconi is a member of the Association in which you are “The first man”.
