EDUCATION, RESEARCH AND PRIVATIZATION CENTER OF UBU “NEZAVISNOST”
REPORT ON SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES OF THE PRIVATIZATION PROCESS
Belgrade, October 18, 2006
The five-year period is behind us, and it is quite sufficient to notice the basic trends in the transition and privatization process in Serbia. This process is judged by many people today, namely, members of political elite, authorities and opposition, independent intellectuals, analysts, citizens, etc. Opinions are divided and range from eulogy to a moderate view that there are certain shifts, but that they are insufficient, and all the way to the other side, on which are those who think that nothing has changed or that the situation is even worse than it was before.
For these reasons, the ERP Center of UBU “Nezavisnost” carried out the first research of economic and social status of employees in privatized companies in Serbia last year, with the financial support of “Progetto Sviluppo” and “UNISON”, and the same research has been repeated in the middle of this year. The results of this research were presented at the National Conference on the topic: “Social consequences of the privatization process”, on October 18, 2006 in Belgrade, and a Booklet, issued on that occasion, was also presented. The participants in the Conference were members of the Presidency of UBU “Nezavisnost”, representatives of “Progetto Sviluppo” and Italian Unions, Federation of Autonomous Unions of Serbia, Serbian Employers’ Union, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Policy and Privatization Agency of the Republic of Serbia, Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Swiss Labor Assistance, senior experts and media representatives.
