While democracy is increasingly progressing in Serbia, in UBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ it doesn’t exist. There is neither common sense nor morality
BRANISLAV CANAK’S STALINIST METHODS
Belgrade, September 17 2008
The UBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Statutory Committee, without any conscience and shame, accused Dragan Matic, President of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’, of rough violation, because he wrote a newspaper text ‘’Shame’’, which was published on the MWBU web site and in the newspaper ‘’Metalpres’’. Mr. Canak and his associates thought this text caused serious damage to ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Union, and so Mr. Branislav Canak and his people (‘’toadies’’) made a decision by a majority of votes to sanction the leader of Metal Workers. As those two trade union organizations are not private, personal conflict between Canak and Matic is not in question, but two different approaches to work. While on one hand there is a progressive, democratic and effective operation of an organization, on the other hand there is unproductive work, autocratic power, bully and imprudent behavior. Due to such work, the future of UBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ is uncertain. In such cases, democracy is an abstract noun, because force reigns in this case and not the law. The MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ expects to find out Mr. Branislav Canak’s way of thinking in order to carry out the debatable decision. The decision of the UBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Leading Committee inspired a desire in members of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ to appeal personally to the President of UBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ and his ‘’toadies’’ at the Session scheduled for May 30 2008 and that this conflict would be settled in the best possible way. Only one question has been asked: Do ‘’toadies’’ have the courage to come and look Metal Workers in the face and state the arguments due to which Dragan Matic was excluded from membership.
One thing is certain. Mr. Branislav Canak has started writing as he has done never before! Through writing, especially when addressing members of UBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ L.C., he likes to ’’preach’’ a little and point out in a discrete manner what members of UBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ L.C. must not do. Members of UBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ L.C. have just received one such letter and the reason is the invitation to members of UBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ L.C. to come and take part in the work of MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ L.C.
In the first part of this letter, Canak wrote: ’’I have to call your attention’’, to all of you, members of UBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ L.C., what you are allowed to do and what you must not do. The freedom of activities of the UBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ L.C. members is such that when they appear somewhere, even at the Session of the UBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ L.C., their Decisions are not valid without Canak’s approval?!
A fear that the participation of UBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ L.C. members in the Session of MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ L.C. would ’’sober up’’ many members and the cancellation of the Decision of UBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ L.C. on exclusion of Dragan Matic is possible, which may result in Canak’s not departing to Geneva, to the ILO Annual Meeting. Well, it is easy to go away, but you have to return home if you have one.
The warnings of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ that B.C. (co-owner of the newspaper ‘’Danas’’) manipulates with people, abuses the office of President of UBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ and assumes competences of the UBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Leading Committee, turned out to be true in the ‘’Information on representatives of UBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ in three-party bodies’’, which was distributed at the Session of the Leading Committee.
When a question was asked by the Secretary of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’, A. Todic, about the names of their representatives appearing in three-party bodies and their appointment, B.C. said that he was the one who did this.
The UBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Leading Committee was silent, it waived the rights assigned to it by trade union members to protect and apply the Statute, while in Art. 39. of the Statute of UBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ it stands: ‘’The Leading Committee is the supreme body between the two Congresses and it appoints representatives of UBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ in two-party and three-party bodies on the national level.’’
