STUDY OF SERBIAN TEXTILE INDUSTRY – STATUS AND PROSPECTS
Belgrade, July 3 2008
All analyses on the prospects of Serbian textile industry are optimistic. It is classified into one of the strategic branches of the economy and represents an important factor in overall creation of gross domestic product. Textile industry employs a large number of workers and scores very good export results. A major branch of the economy in many Serbian regions is just textile industry. It is a considerable source of income for many families. Such regions are: Leskovac, Vranje, Pirot, etc. Their survival and development are closely associated with the production, sale, textile export.
The following factors are necessary for future development of textile industry:
Permanent restructuring and streamlining of operations.
This refers to application of new solutions in the production, new management, design. There has been an increased need for the most streamlined machines that would enable high productivity of higher-quality products and thereby create competition in foreign markets.
Change of the production structure
Products existing in Indian and Chinese market must not be a preoccupation of domestic textile industry. One should aspire towards production of finer products which for there is a demand in the world market.
Enhancing competitive position
Based on low cost manpower, many develop their competitiveness. Such manpower can be found in China and South-East Asia. One should tend to high-quality goods and creation of products with higher added value.
Investments
Without foreign investments the textile industry survival is impossible. The inflow of new investments brings about new development of textile industry. Foreign investors do not only invest capital, but they invest new technology, organization of operations, design, and thereby a better approach to foreign markets is realized.
Exports promotion
An improved export status toward the USA and the Agreement with Russia on free trade are opportunities that textile industry must take advantage of. Membership in the World Trade Organization shall conduce to improved status of Serbia compared to other countries and expanding the market for product sales as well.
Cooperation among manufacturers
Serbian manufacturers must be integrated, and in this way they have to appear on international level. They must investigate the market jointly, deal with promotional activities and appear at trade fairs. They have to exchange experience too.
This is some of the basic subject matter of the study “Status and prospects of Serbian Textile Industry’’ in which people will be involved in the area of science, textile branch, government institutions, employers and trade unions, involved in textile industry development.
