MWBU ‘’NEZAVISNOST’’ VISITED MAJDANPEK; DISCUSSION WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF THE TRUSTEE COMMITTEE

MAJDANPEK MUST BE GIVEN A NEW CHANCE

Majdanpek, March 18 2008
A town that is often mentioned in the public by the fact that an apartment with an area of 50 - 60 m2 can be bought at the price of a few thousand Euro, gets new opportunities to restore old fame it had in the seventies and eighties of the 20th century. A condition for such view is in the fact that by privatization of ‘’RTB’’ and ‘’RBM’’ too, a possibility was ascertained to create conditions for higher employee earnings through investments and production increase.

The opportunities are outstanding, and Austrian A-Tec will certainly utilize the resources that Majdanpek possesses. These are some of the conclusions reached by representatives of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ during the talks conducted with the executive management of RBM. The representatives of ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Trade Union stressed their concern because of the current political situation threatening to destabilize the entire economy and ‘’push’’ everyday life problems of people and economic problems into the background.

The visit to Majdanpek was also used to give a presentation of the supplementary pension insurance by ‘’Garant Pension Fund’’ with which the MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ has had cooperation for two years already. The intention of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ is to arouse employer’s and employees’ awareness of the necessity of care for old age and pensions, because facts tell us that our pension allowances will be considerably lower than earnings, and old age can be hard and long-lasting. Mr. Goran Jelisavac of ‘’Garant Pension Fund’’ presented the supplementary pension insurance in the premises of ‘’Zlatara’’ and explained the applicable statutory regulations in this area, as well as the possibilities of pay-in of the funds for supplementary pension insurance.

An action for speeding up the privatization of ‘’Zlatara’’ (Goldsmith’s shop) and a joint approach toward the Privatization Agency, with the participation of colleagues of the AMWTUS, has been agreed with the members of ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Union of ‘’Zlatara’’ and the executive management. If privatization does not occur, the future of ‘’Zlatara’’ and its employees can go toward the declaration of bankruptcy.
FBC is a good example ‘’that privatization can be successful and for this reason the MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ put FBC on the list in its action called ‘’Top 10 of Serbian privatization of metal industry sector’’. Privatization does not solve all problems, but the example of FBC tells that a serious customer, good manpower and responsible trade unions can make significant steps forward as in better company positioning, so also in improving employee standard of living’’, stressed Dragan Matic, President of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’.

At this time FBC exports over 90% of its production, employment, compared to pre-privatization period, increased by 20%, and there are almost 50% of new young workers. The Job Safety Commission started working and periodical medical checkup of employees was provided with Majdanpek Medical Center. Arguments and dialogue are a base on which relations are developed between FBC Management and representatives of ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Union.

A conclusion after this visit of trade union representatives of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ was that Majdanpek was very near the ‘’green branch’’, but was also approaching an abyss if the State and its institutions did not provide necessary support.
