SEMINAR ON JOB SAFETY AND INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE IN OBRENOVAC

THE IMPORTANCE OF PREVENTION

The Seminar on job safety and industrial hygiene was held in Obrenovac from October 29 - 31, organized by IGM (German Metal Workers Union) and MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost”, with the financial support of Friedrich Ebert Foundation. The lecturers were our “old friends” Heinz Sowa and Felix Bader, who are experts in the area of job safety and IH. Besides the members of the Job Safety Commission of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost” and colleagues of regional trustee committees, the seminar was also attended by colleagues of the AMWUS, as well as of ‘’Nezavisnost” Branch Union of Textile, Leather and Footwear.

The topics, treated by the applicable Job Safety and IH Law, were discussed at the seminar, which are still new in our practice, concerning unionists as well as the management, which are as follows:
-Risk analysis
-Insurance in the case of accident
-Forming and activities of Job Safety Commission on all levels
-Co-decision-making and union’s role and impact on improving working conditions and functioning of the entire job safety and IH system, as well as preparing trustee committees for improving working conditions
-Practical experience in job safety and health care in Germany.

Special attention was drawn to seminar attendees to prevention, whereby rehabilitation and indemnification costs would be reduced in case of injuries and professional diseases. Exceptional importance is attached to prevention through regulations and inspection, advising, investigating, professional exams and similar actions. Cost reduction is presented through insurance system, because employers not taking care of job safety and IH, so that accidents happen on the job, are fined in this way. In cases where this doesn’t happen one gets benefits.
The attendees showed interest in this seminar, because there is no such thing in Serbia. Practical work was reflected in the activities within which diseases and overburdening in our companies were identified. The Risk Assessment Act was adopted and activating the protection system on company, regional and State level was agreed.
