PRIVATIZATION OF ’’ZASTAVA AUTOMOBILI’’ FROM FES VIEWPOINT

’’ZASTAVA AUTOMOBILI’’ PROJECT

Kragujevac, October 22 2007
A meeting was held in Kragujevac, organized by ’’Friedrich Ebert’’ Foundation, at which the participants were MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’, Serbian Autonomous Metal Workers’ Union, Chamber of Commerce of Kragujevac, as well as union representatives of ’’Zastava automobili’’. The objective of the meeting was to discuss the approaching privatization of ’’Zastava’’ through a project titled ’’Zastava automobili’’, whose author is FES. The project contains the current situation in ’’Zastava’’, projected cooperation with ’’Opel’’, GM and Trade Union, Opel’s Employees Council. Frank Hantke of FES had a presentation on the ’’Initial reflection on a joint project’’ which consists of several issues and views.

What is it about? Who will take part? Which are our targets? How can this function? A potential work schedule. Union representatives gave their comment and stated their opinion after the presentation.

-’’Union cooperation in the project is conditioned by joint positions on the privatization of ’’Zastava automobili’’. Serbian Autonomous Metal Workers’ Union and MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ have different approaches to privatization in Serbia at this time. This difference is especially expressed in Bor and pleading for nationalizing large metal industry complexes (Bor, specific-purpose production, automotive industry ..) which is contrary to possibilities provided by the law. It is important to all participants in the meeting what is going to happen with ’’Zastava’’. The future of ’’Zastava’’ employees shall be decided on at this time. By ’’building the future we assume responsibility as to how this future will look like’’, stressed D. Matic, President of MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’.

Zoran Vujovic of the AMWUS stated his opinion of the privatization of ’’Zastava’’, and said: ’’Privatization is a serious thing and AMWUS approaches this process with responsibility, oriented towards the future.

The privatization of ’’Zastava automobili’’ is important as for employees of ’’Zastava’’ and Kragujevac, so also for the state of Serbia. ’’Opel’’ is welcome to Kragujevac and ’’Zastava’’. We must know what ’’Opel’’ offers to workers, unions, local government ?’’

Summarizing the presentation of union representatives, Frank Hantke of FES drew a conclusion that union participation in the project was not disputable, but it was necessary to form a task group that would be responsible for the activities associated with the project ’’Zastava automobili’’.

The participants in the meeting emphasized a few priorities associated with the future buyer of ’’Zastava’’, and these are long-term prospects, safe and secure job, additional employment, better salaries, social security, working conditions and additional education and training.

The conclusion of the meeting resulted in forming a task group from representatives of the meeting participants. This Group shall coordinate views and suggest the tempo and type of activities to be performed.
