THE ORGANIZING SCHOOL OF MWBU ‘’NEZAVISNOST’’ TRAINED THE FIRST GENERATION OF ACTIVE UNION MEMBERS

WITH UNIONIST KNOWLEDGE TO MEMBERSHIP

Long lasting sincere interceding of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ in dealing with education of our members actively and on a long-term basis, has lasted for 10 years already. On this path we have a strong and lasting support of FES Foundation, as well as of Solidarity Center AFL CIO. The representative of AFL CIO, colleague Laurie Clemens, as an outstanding unionist and instructor for distinguished active members of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’, organized a 3-day seminar on the subject of ‘’Unionist organizing and recruiting’’. Union organizing and approach to small and medium-size enterprises was especially stressed.

It was also presented to participants in the seminar why it is important to organize unions and determine unions’ strategy. In order that a union has a key role in a society, it must have a strong support of members and active members, which has to be a part of daily activities, stressed Laurie Clemens. Numerous exercises enabled the participants to show enthusiasm and quality they possess in unionist activities to a full extent. A real ‘’war’’ was waged in exercises ‘’one on one’’, lobbying, strategies for admission of new members.

With such membership the MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ does not have to worry about its future. Almost one half of the participants in the seminar were young people and women, and this is a good indicator that MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ follows the path of a modern and progressive union. The activities that have to be performed in the field have been agreed in the final integrating of all seminar topics. Men and women colleagues from Smederevo, Uzice, Kraljevo, Smederevska Palanka, Zajecar, Bor, Majdanpek, Leskovac, Vranje, Zrenjanin, Belgrade, go to their enterprises ‘’armed’’ with skills and knowledge, as a prerequisite for admitting new members and thereby a new power necessary for MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’.

This seminar is especially important, because of the participation of representatives of the BU TLF ‘’Nezavisnost’’ with which we are jointly laying down the foundations of Serbian Industrial Union.

The MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ expresses its gratitude to ‘’Friedrich Ebert’’ Foundation and to Laurie Clemens for the organization of this very important seminar.
