Belgrade, August 29, 2007
The MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’was visited by Mr. Jurgin Peters, IG METALL and IMF President, as well as by Horst Mund, Head of IGM’s International Division, who were guests of MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ for 3 days. Cooperation between IGM and MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’, lasting 15 years, was developing by rising line, and if one stated the opinion that MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ achieved enviable results in the past period, then we might freely say that IGM also took part in this overall success. Help, support, as well as considerable financial resources made possible that MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ was recognized as a reformist trade union, with proEuropean orientation, with a strong internal democratic structure on the territories of Serbia and South-East Europe.

-’’There is no greater privilege and pleasure than to learn and be in friendly and brotherly relations with the IGM Union, stressed Dragan Matic, President of MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’.

The visit of IGM and IMF high officials was utilized for the meeting with the Minister of Labor and Social Policy, Rasim Ljajic. Minister Ljajic gave a short presentation of activities and priorities to be realized by the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, as well as the problems burdening the entire Serbian society, highlighting the problem of Kosovo and the Hague, as the fulfillment of the conditions for integration in the European society. There is also a great interest of the Ministry in strengthening the social dialogue and reforms in the job safety area that have been partly realized.

Colleague Jurgin Peters stated that there was significant experience in those areas in Germany, resulting from the period of uniting East and West Germany, and some processes have still not been terminated. An interest of the Ministry of Labor was also confirmed in organizing a Conference on the situation and prospects of Serbian Automotive Industry and a support was given, and the participation of IGM and IMF confirmed.

Colleague Peters especially clarified and stressed the existence of European social model, having as ultimate target the application in all EU countries, as well as in candidate countries. – ’’Trade Unions must take part in building and developing a socially responsible state and maintain and create all processes at the end of which there are EU stars’’, stressed D. Matic in closing this productive working meeting.

The IGM guests were informed about the trade union, economic and political situation in Serbia, and there was especially word about the privatization and current situation. A visit to ’’Minel Kotlogradnja’’ has been organized, which was privatized a year ago by Rudnap Group, and represents a good example of privatized company, with successful operations and good relations with trade unions and employees.

Talks were also conducted with representatives of ’’Friedrich Ebert’’ Foundation with which both IGM and MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ have had a long-lasting cooperation. Mr. Frank Hantke, head of FES Office in Belgrade, talked about that cooperation and results achieved.

The IGM representatives were pleased with the visit to MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ and they encouraged us and gave their support for future activities. At the end of the visit it was confirmed that good relations, mutual respect and support of MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ would be continued.
