THE YOUTH SECTION OF UBU ’’NEZAVISNOST’’ : INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY

’’LET THEM SEE YOU, LET THEM HEAR YOU’’

Belgrade, August 15, 2007
United Nations celebrate August 12 as the International Youth Day, with the intention of making possible for everyone to be informed about young people’s potential, celebrate their accomplishments and find a way for them to take part in the society development as much as possible. This year’s slogan of the International Youth Day, ’’Let them see you, let them hear you’’, is in fact an invitation to young people to take part in the decision-making on all social levels.

We often encounter the slogan ’’young people are the future’’, but one shouldn’t disregard the fact that young people can make a positive contribution to the development of the present society. Though it is clear that the participation of young people in making decisions on all levels is very important, however, the young people are very often excluded from social progress in practice.

International institutions very often stress that successful involvement of young people in these processes brings about the enactment of positive regulations, better implementation and evaluation. Active participation of the young in making decisions on all social levels enables greater commitment and better understanding of human rights and democratic principles among the young. The involvement of the young in the settlement of conflict and post-conflict situations, as well as the protection of their rights, especially young women’s rights, is extremely important.

In order that young people get involved in changes effectively, it is necessary to annul the prejudices of the present society that inhibit young people’s contribution to overall progess. It is necessary to supersede the intergeneration gap and give support to the young to take an active part in all programs and activities having a direct impact on them too. Efficient strategies for more active participation of the young in the society have to supersede ’’ad hoc’’ approaches, in order to involve and engage young people in all aspects of social structure, relevant institutions and processes, in an organized way.

Also, it is necessary to enable young people an improved and high-quality access to information on their rights and obligations; one should especially promote the participation of young people in the social and political life, development of the society and environment protection, and everything with respect of the right to association, with the view of protecting young people’s interests.

The Youth Section of the United Branch Unions ’’Nezavisnost’’ deals, in an organized manner, with young people’s problems in Serbia, problems they encounter after completed school, when entering the labor market and in the ’’world of labor’’ itself. We plead for an increased employment of young people, safeguarding specific professional, labor, social and unionist rights and interests of the young, more efficient social and health protection of young workers, consistent application of special job safety regulations pertaining to young people.
