SUMMER SCHOOL “WEEK OF SOCIAL-DEMOCRACY”
GATHERING OF YOUNG PEOPLE FROM THE “WEST BALKANS”

The traditional, second summer school “Week of Social-Democracy”, was organized from July 6 – 12, 2007 in “Dunav” Camp, Zemun, under the auspices of “Friedrich Ebert” and “Jean Jaures” Foundations. This event gathered about 80 young people from the territory of “West Balkans” – from the countries of former Yugoslavia and Albania, but also from the EU countries – Germany, Czech Republic, France, Holland, Ireland… The participants in the “Camp” were young people from political parties of socio-political orientation, NVO and trade union representatives. Ms. Danica Tomasevic took part in the “Camp” as the Youth representative of UBU and MWBU “Nezavisnost”.
The summer school program was as follows: lectures, workshops and plenary meetings. The lectures pertained to some key issues in the West Balkans – the EU integrations, human and minority rights, civil society, political systems, the media, trade unions, decent work, migrations, globalization … The speakers and lecturers were renowned experts and persons from the public life, politicians and NVO representatives. The president of UBU “Nezavisnost”, Mr. Branislav Canak, participated in the “Camp” as a guest-lecturer.
The workshops were organized in three groups: “Political skills training”, “SD 9 coordination” and “Global progressive youth forum (GPYF).
“Political skills training” included participant informing about some of the most important political skills – conducting a campaign, public appearances, communication, teamwork.
“SD 9 coordination” pertained to dissemination of ideas and objectives of SD9 system (9 social-democratic youth organizations from the territory of ex Yugoslavia): creating a strong political alliance that will secure a stronger position for organizations-members at national level, strengthening mutual cooperation, promotion of ideas of IUSY (International Union of Socialist Youth) and ECOSY (European Community Organization of Socialist Youth) in the countries of ex Yugoslavia, a joint strategic approach to foreign countries, as well as organizing joint activities and actions that will promote social-democratic ideas in the society.
“GPYF” (Global progressive youth forum) dealt with the following issues: social movements, young people’s role in the movements, children’s work, young people’s education and employment, international solidarity, black market and discrimination in the labor market. The ultimate goal of these workshops was enacting of the ‘’Declaration’’ on further Forum operations and expanding the network to the territories of ex-Yugoslavia for possible cooperation concerning the fight for decent work. In GPYF’s work, an important, leading role of trade union was emphasized in deciding on these issues, therefore, cooperation is expected in the near future between this organization and our trade union, especially the Youth Section.
