THE STRIKERS OF “MILAN BLAGOJEVIC” COMPANY EARMARKED THE MANIFESTATION “SMEDEREVSKA JESEN”

“ALCATRAZ” ON THE RIVER JEZAVA




Smederevo, October 9, 2006.

Judging by reactions of the majority of visitors of the business – tourist trade manifestation “Smederevska jesen”, which was organized from September 29 –
October 1, 2006, as well as according to the number of published texts, photographs and film fragments in the media – the strikers of “Milan Blagojevic-Invej” of Smederevo were in the center of attention, who earmarked this year’s manifestation by their actions, in the organization of “Nezavisnost” Union.

The “Nezavisnost” Union of “Milan Blagojevic” Smederevo and MWBU “Nezavisnost” succeeded in occupying the interest of the citizens of Smederevo, as well as the guests of the business – tourist trade manifestation “Smederevska jesen” by many actions and performances, associated with the strike in this company. The strike which has lasted 3 months already in “MBS-Invej”, was provoked by the employer, company owner Predrag Rankovic – Peconi, a controversial Serbian businessman, who does not respect essential human freedoms and rights, the right to union organizing, as well as the right to collective negotiating.

The strikers carried “flying sandwich billboards” during this manifestation, which lasted for 3 days, and on which various slogans were written: “Rotten face of Serbia – law of force or force of law”, “Alcatraz on the river Jezava”, “We don’t want force, but we want Collective Agreement, personal protective equipment, earnings and bonus”, “Get bread by strike”, “Peconi’s march of the hungry”, “Wanted – Predrag Rankovic – Peconi”, poster – obituary, with the following text: “We inform the relatives and friends, big and small shareholders, citizens of Smederevo and Serbia that the range “Smederevac”, born in 1923, died after a serious disease called social dialogue in 2006, what is unknown to Predrag Rankovic – Peconi”.

The strikers also organized an action called “We choose the oldest range – Smederevac, under the motto – “new one for the old one”. The members of “Nezavisnost” Union of “MBS”, with the support of their colleagues from “Nezavisnost” Union, U.S. Steel Serbia, MWBU “Nezavisnost”, bought a new range that cost Din. 12.500, from their membership dues, and the aim of this action was to express revolt, because of the rights that were not respected during the strike which lasted for 3 months. Milorad Konradovic (83) from Smederevo was awarded the prize, who bought the range “Smederevac” way back in 1962. It is still in good working condition. He got a new range from the strikers in return.

On Sunday, the last day of “Smederevska jesen”, the strikers performed an action at the business stand called “Flowers for exhibitors”. While the strikers were handing over bouquets of fresh flowers to all exhibitors, a special bouquet of flowers was prepared and handed over to Predrag Rankovic - Peconi, namely, an old can containing earth and weeds. On that occasion, the strikers had a “close encounter” with the Minister of Justice in the Republic Government, Zoran Stojkovic, guest at “Smederevska jesen”, and who listened attentively in order to learn about their problems and requests, and finally promised that he would not forget them.
