IV CONFERENCE OF TRADE UNIONS OF SOUTH-EAST EUROPE HELD IN SARAJEVO

GATHERING OF FRIENDS

Sarajevo, July 2007
The IV Conference of Trade Unions of South-East Europe was held in Sarajevo on June 28 – 29, 2007, organized by our traditional partners “CC.OO” and “Pau and Solidaritat” from Spain, at which the following metal workers’ unions participated: “SIER”, Macedonia, “SPMK”, Kosovo, “SMH”, Croatia, MWBU “Nezavisnost”, Serbia, “SKEI”, Slovenia, “SMIR”, Republic of Srpska and “SM BiH”, Bosnia & Herzegovina.

All the participants in the Conference were glad that the colleagues from Catalonia were present, with whom we had the opportunity to talk and thank them for their help and support to metal workers’ unions of South-East Europe. All of them together and the organizations they represent became a cohesive element, integrating and bringing together metal workers’ unions of South-East Europe and making possible the implementation of certain projects, as well as an exchange of experience from the states in which trade unions are active.

The representatives of the executive authorities of Sarajevo Canton, as well as the representatives of SSS BiH were present at the inaugural Conference, who welcomed all those present at the Conference. In two days of the Conference work the metal workers’ unions of South-East Europe discussed about women’s status, job safety and industrial hygiene, social dialogue and protection of workers’ rights. The discussion about job safety was especially interesting, because of recent death of three workers in the Iron & Steel Works “Mital Steel” Zenica. A unanimous conclusion of all participants in the Conference was that job safety represented an inseparable part of the production process and that there wouldn’t be any production without adequate workers’ protection.

The following representatives of MWBU “Nezavisnost” participated in the work of the IV Conference: Negoslav Jovanovic, Vice-President, Aleksandar Todic, Secretary, Branimir Tomasevic, Vice-President and President of the Job Safety Commission, Kosovka Gavrilovic, President of the Women’s Section, Miodrag Gvozdenovic, member of the Presidency of Belgrade Region, and Nela Markovic, member of the Job Safety Commission.

The discussion and positions of MWBU “Nezavisnost” contributed that the Conference participants, summarizing the work of the Conference lasting two days, unanimously adopted the Declaration on women’s status, job safety and IH, social dialogue and protection of workers’ rights. The IV Conference was closed after adopting the aforesaid Declaration.
