THE LEADERSHIP OF MWBU ‘’NEZAVISNOST’’ CONDUCTED TALKS WITH THE GENERAL DIRECTOR OF ‘’ZASTAVA’’ GROUP

START OF ‘’ZASTAVA 10’’

Kragujevac, July 2007
A visit of the leadership of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ to ‘’Zastava’’ Group and talks with the General Director, Zoran Radojevic, confirmed traditionally good relations developed in ‘’Zastava’’ by MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’. An unexpected sickness of the Secretary General of the EMF, Peter Scherer, disabled us to conduct talks at the international trade union cooperation level, but joint positions of ‘’Zastava’’ Group and MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ were confirmed, associated with the need for the existence and development of Serbian Automotive Industry.

One hundred and fifty-five years of industry tradition in Kragujevac and Sumadija, tells about the potential existing in ‘’Zastava’’, and that is one of the main reasons for attracting foreign investors. One can say that the period of crisis is behind us and that the start of ‘’Zastava 10’’, as well as a certain business with ‘’General Motors’’ and ‘’Opel’’ represent an important step forward in business operations of ‘’Zastava’’ Group and Serbian Automotive Industry. It is also important to note that ‘’Zastava’’ Group paid back the debt to ‘’Fiat’’ from its own funds, and that over 6 million euro have been invested so far in the new programs, and that the total investment will be 15 million euro, to be provided through favorable credit investments.

During the talks, a significant concern was shown about the workers being in the Employment Office’s records, and about their future, and the joint conclusion was that we had to provide the potential of re-employment of those people, training and re-training, as well as the funds for starting their own business. It was impressive to see the new lines, streamlined equipment and robotized machines, at which ‘’Zastava 10’’ would be produced, and we hope ‘’Opel’’ in the near future. Also, an interest was confirmed and a support given to the ‘’International Conference on the Situation and Prospects of Serbian and South-East Europe Automotive Industry’’, we planned to organize in October 2007, on which occasion the city of Kragujevac and ‘’Zastava’’ Group would be the host.

A joint conclusion of the General Director of ‘’Zastava’’ Group, Mr. Radojevic, as well as the representatives of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’, was that these operations and projects were not an ultimate solution to which one strived, but that they represented an important step forward in the joint positions that the automotive industry had prospects and that it was of national importance.
