UNIONIST AND EXPERT IN ARCHEOMETALLURGY
Belgrade, June 20, 2007
Within the II International Conference on ‘’Archeometallurgy in Europe’’, organized from June 17 – 21, 2007 in Aquileia, Italy, the scientific papers of Mr. Jovan Stojkovic, M. Sc., employed in ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Union in Smederevo, have been included in the official Program. The scientific papers titled ‘’Metallurgical concepts in Serbia’’ and ‘’Foundation History of the Old Iron and Steel Works in Serbia’’, the co-author of which is Snezana Devic, D. Sc., of the IMS Institute, Belgrade, are the only scientific papers from Serbia presented at this eminent Conference, representing a significant contribution to Serbian science and history of iron and steel metallurgy in Europe.
Our colleague, J. Stojkovic, M. Sc., has been employed in ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Union of USS since October 2004 and still works in this Union, because he could not reject the request and offer of his old colleague M. Gujanicic, President of ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Union of U. S. Steel Serbia, d.o.o., with whom he used to work together in the 70-ies as a skilled control stand operator at the Pusher Furnaces of the Hot Rolling Mill.
-‘’We worked together for many years in the same shift, went through ‘’good and bad’’ and literally speaking, shared one meat paste for lunch. Colleague Gujanicic often replaced me at work, so that I had more time to dedicate myself to part-time studying and receiving my degree from the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade within the envisaged study period. After many years, perhaps due to fate, we work together again, this time not in the Rolling Mill but in ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Union, said Stojkovic.
Colleague Stojkovic has a long C.V.: he was born on January 10, 1960 in Smederevo. He completed the Elementary School in Osipaonica (near Smederevo) where he lives with his family, Technical School – Metallurgy Program, in Smederevo, Ethnology (Cultural Anthropology) at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, and he received his M. Sc. degree from the Belgrade University in 1995 – Center for Multidisciplinary Studies, History and Philosophy of Natural Science and Technology Major. Mr. Stojkovic received his M. Sc. degree as a fellowship holder of Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences (SAAS).
Our colleague used to work on the following jobs: Skilled control stand operator at the Pusher Furnaces of SARTID’s Hot Rolling Mill, journalist of the Factory’s Newspaper, expert associate in the Institute for Metallurgy, founder and manager of the Museum of Ferrous Metallurgy of former SARTID, Deputy Manager of PR Department, and Head of Professional Services of ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Union as from 2004. He especially distinguished himself in the following areas: history of economy, science history, history of industry and technology, industrial heritage, industrial and unionist Public Relations. He is the author of over 20 exhibitions in the area of metallurgical history of Serbia.
Within Serbian museum science Mr. Stojkovic was at one time: President of Transition Committee of Yugoslav National Committee Museum of IKOM with UNESCO, member of the Archeometallurgy Board of the Republic Institute for Protection of Monuments, Manuscripts and Documents, Manager of the Republic’s Research Project ‘’Ethnological Study of Smederevo and Surroundings.’’
From Mr. Stojkovic’s scientific and expert papers, the following should be especially highlighted: a book titled ‘’SARTID – Serbian Steel Industry 1913-1946’’, edition of the Community of Engineering Faculties of Belgrade University, Museum of Science and Technology and Lola Institute of Belgrade, promoted in 2001 in the SAAS. Then, a book titled ‘’Giving presents and gifts in Smederevo milieu’’, edition of the National Library of Smederevo, promoted on the occasion of central earmarking of the ‘’European Heritage Day’’ in Serbia, in 2003, in Smederevo.
In the area of theory and practice of unionist activities in the ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Union, Mr. Stojkovic is, together with colleagues of the mentioned Trade Union, the co-author of several original union’s actions: ‘’For a better life in the factory’’, ‘’Disclosed truth’’, ‘’For the future’’, 62 issues of Information leaflets of the Factory’s Union, 23 issues of union’s billboards … (Enclosure: D. Matic and M. Gujanicic).
