EUROPEAN METALWORKERS' FEDERATION

NSN EUROPEAN DAY OF ACTION 12 JUNE

Brisel, 7. 06. 2007.
The EMF and its affiliates to launch a European Day of Action on 12th June for the safeguard of jobs at Nokia Siemens Networks. In the wake of the trade union coordination meeting, which was organized on 25th May 2007 after the European restructuring announced by the management of Nokia Siemens Networks to debate employment prospects in the company, European metalworkers’ unions have decided to organize a European Day of Action on 12th June 2007 to protest at the 9000 jobs that are about to be cut.

EMF affiliates in countries where Nokia Siemens Networks has operations will express their concerns and demonstrate their solidarity for safeguarding jobs and for a sustainable future for their company.

The rapid disappearance of highly-qualified jobs and the shift of high-added value activities to other economic areas raise serious concerns about the ability and willingness of both the European Union and European companies to preserve jobs and achieve the Lisbon Strategy objective of a knowledge-based economy providing quality-jobs for European workers.

On 12th June 2007, the EMF and its affiliates will also remind the EU Commission and national Governments of their commitment to preserve jobs in Europe and will call for more aggressive industrial and economic policies enabling Europe to provide its citizens and workers with good quality jobs and better economic prospects.
