MUNICIPALITY OF KRALJEVO AND STRIKE IN “MAGNOHROM”

A SERIOUS PARTNER AND HOST

April 30, 2007
The workers of “Magnohrom”, in strike for almost two months, can be satisfied, because the President of the Municipality of Kraljevo, Dr Milos Babic, showed what was meant by being a responsible social partner and authority. – “Concern for the future of “Magnohrom” and almost 2500 workers is a priority of Kraljevo Municipality at this time”, stated Dr Milos Babic, President of the Municipality of Kraljevo, at the meeting attended by members of the Strikers’ Committee of “Magnohrom’’, Dragan Matic, President of MWBU “Nezavisnost”, Pantovic Radoslav, Director of “Magnohrom’’ and a representative of Global Steel, majority owner of “Magnohrom’’.

Those present stated their opinion of the current situation, and using the social dialogue form, agreed that all future activities should be performed through a three-party system. The Strikers’ Committee of “Magnohrom” informed all present that it could conduct all negotiations in the future with the support of “Nezavisnost” Union.

When analyzing the events starting from privatization until today, the Director of “Magnohrom’’ concluded that the company’s situation was difficult, as well as the expectations that “Global Steel” would resolve the problems soon and start normal production by taking active measures and observing Serbian legislation and Purchase and Sales Contract. This meeting showed that the municipal structure, i.e. the Municipality President in this case, could and had to be a cohesive element in a situation of deep social division.

The “revolted” workers reacted very well when the President of the Municipality of Kraljevo appeared at the moment when a conflict of strikers and special police forces threatened. In this way, it is possible that conflicted sides make an agreement and coordinate different views.

Closing the meeting, the participants agreed on the following common stands:

1.There aren’t substantially different views of members of the Strikers’ Committee and the Management of “Magnohrom” concerning the evaluation of the current situation, as well as the modes and steps to find a way out of the critical situation.
2.The Agency for amicable settlement of disputes shall be engaged, which should contribute to faster solving of the current problems that arose.
3.All three sides, representatives of Kraljevo Municipality, representatives of the Strikers’ Committee and ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Union, as well as the representatives of “Magnohrom’s” Management shall act in unison toward government institutions, first of all, Serbian Government and Serbian Ministry of Economic Affairs.
4.All pressures and illicit conduct of the Management, as well as of the Strikers’ Committee shall cease with full observance of enactments and by-laws, and different opinions and views shall be coordinated through negotiations.
5.All agreements reached by the Strikers’ Committee of “Magnohrom” with “Global Steel” at the negotiations in Belgrade, will be fully observed, and “only the money that “Global Steel” has to provide is expected”.

Dr Milos Babic, President of the Municipality of Kraljevo, took on himself the obligation to schedule a meeting with the representatives of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Government representatives, in order to discuss about a specific support to be given to “Magnohrom”.
