TRADE UNION ''METALICY'' AND MWBU ''NEZAVISNOST'' IN ''MAGNOHROM''

A STRONG FRATERNAL SUPPORT TO ''MAGNOHROM''

Kraljevo, March 24, 2007
''The employees of ''Magnohrom'' may expect a strong fraternal support from all unionist structures of the European Metal Workers' Federation, the members of which are Bulgarian Trade Union ''Metalicy'' and MWBU ''Nezavisnost'' – stated Vasil Yanachkov, President of ''Metalicy'' Union, in the talks conducted on March 21, 2007 with the representatives of ''Nezavisnost'' Union of ''Magnohrom'', Secretary of ''Nezavisnost'' Union of ''Magnohrom'', Miodrag Mitic, as well as the representative of Strikers' Committee, Bozidar Djalovic.

The reason for holding this meeting is in the fact that ''Global Steel'' has become the owner of ''Magnohrom'' recently and that it possesses, at the same time, some plants in Bulgaria, more precisely, in Kremikovci, where 7000 workers are employed. The non-observance of the Purchase and Sales Contract and Collective Agreement, bad treating of employees, strike in the company, are things not being unknown to Global Steel. Similar behavior was shown in Kremikovci, but the colleagues from Bulgaria obtained a better status, through persistent struggle.

The experience of ''Metalicy'' Trade Union is valuable in the unionist struggle against the employers from India, especially concerning a strong support from international trade union organizations, first of all, the International and European Metal Workers' Federation, a member of which is the MWBU ''Nezavisnost'' too. The Secretary General of the European Metal Workers' Federation, Peter Scherer, was informed of the events in ''Magnohrom'', who stressed the necessity of international trade union association, as a response to the internationalization of the world capital, in direct conversation with the President of MWBU ''Nezavisnost'', Dragan Matic and President of ''Metalicy'' Union, Vasil Yanachkov. A great experience, international recognition, organization of MWBU ''Nezavisnost'' have to be applied in ''Magnohrom'' case. The status of factory's trade unions, regardless of their present strength, is not a guarantee for the future, and therefore, an organized and lasting integration of all trade union's capacities must be reached.

The MWBU ''Nezavisnost'' and ''Nezavisnost'' Trade Union of ''Magnohrom'' are willing to create, through integration, a ''counterweight'' for arogant and irresponsible behavior, shown by Global Steel. One must now allow that workers, although organized in a trade union, should lead a strike by themselves, with little or no experience at all, risking that the employer, due to violation of the law, gives notices of dismissal to those forced to organize a strike.

The MWBU ''Nezavisnost'' has something to offer in that joint struggle, oriented towards overall interests of all workers of ''Magnohrom''. The future of ''Magnohrom'' must be created also on the basis of workers' attitudes and opinions, and that is impossible without unionist solidarity, necessary in all the situations when the world of capital strikes with all its force against workers' and unionist rights. Colleague Vasil Yanachkov, President of ''Metalicy'' Trade Union, promised an intense campaign in Bulgaria, in the sense of informing the Bulgarian public of the events in ''Magnohrom'', and the MWBU ''Nezavisnost'' will take specific actions with the view of improving the status of ''Magnohrom'' workers.
